The Science
of “Automatic Change”.

Most of us have been led to believe that significant change only comes with a tremendous amount of willpower, struggle, and conscious effort. However, thanks to over 100 years of careful scientific research, we have overwhelming evidence this belief simply ISN’T true.

Research from the late 1890’s (from the Nobel Laureate Ivan Pavlov, whom I talk about in Stage 4 of this “Panic Free” program)… continuing up until today (by thousands of researchers all around the world, spearheaded by the Nobel Laureate, Daniel Khaneman)… has shown that our brains have two very different types of learning and change “systems”:

  1. A Fast Automatic System which controls all our automatic and involuntary patterns of emotion, thought, and behavior (whether these are helpful or not)…
  2. A Slow Effortful System which requires consistent willpower, vigilance, and conscious effort.

Whenever anyone tries to change an ingrained, automatic pattern through willpower, logic, or talking about it (whether with the help of a therapist or by oneself)… it’s an attempt to try to use the slow, effortful willpower-based system to OVERPOWER the fast, involuntary “Automatic System”.

As anyone who’s tried to overpower anxiety or panic attacks can attest, more often than not… trying to use this Slow, Effortful Willpower-Based System to fight our automatic urges is like…

It’s incredibly hard to do (and often backfires).

On top of this… even though our Slow, Effortful Willpower-Based System CAN gradually influence our “Automatic System” over time (if we’re able to muster the consistent, disciplined effort required), the results tend to be fragile and usually require continual “booster shots” of willpower to maintain.

Trying to use our Slow, Effortful Willpower-Based System to overpower our Fast Automatic System is the main reason why most people are frustrated that change seems so incredibly hard.

Here’s why: if you’ve watched Stage 2 of my “Panic Free” program, you’ve heard me tell the story of the boiler-maker:

A boiler-maker was hired to fix a huge steamship boiler system that wasn’t working well. There were hundreds of guests ready for their holiday, but the ship wasn’t going anywhere.

After being brought onboard to fix the problem, and after listening to the ship’s engineer describe the situation… the boilermaker asked a few questions and went to the boiler room.

He looked at the complex, twisted maze of pipes.

He listened, for a few minutes, to the thumping sound of the boiler, and the hiss of the escaping steam.

He felt certain pipes with his hands.

And then he reached into his overalls, he took out a small hammer— and tapped one tiny, little valve, just one time.

Immediately the whole system began to work perfectly.

Everyone was amazed.

The ship's engineer thanked him, and the boilermaker went home.

When the steamship owner received the bill, and when he looked down and saw it was for $1,000… he was shocked!

The boilermaker had only been in the engine room for 15 minutes.

Skype Sessions Are NOT
Right For Everyone

Skype means that you and I can connect and improve your life, even if we’re on opposite sides of the planet.

It’s amazing.

However, as amazing it is, Skype Sessions are NOT a good fit for everyone.

Skype sessions are NOT a good fit for you:

  • If you’re currently under intensive care from a psychiatrist or have been diagnosed with a “personality disorder”.
  • If you’re suicidal, or have ANY thoughts of hurting yourself in any way (If this sounds like you, then please find a competent professional who can look after you in your city ASAP. It would NOT be responsible of me to try to look after you from the other side of the world).

Skype sessions ARE a good fit for you if:

  • You already take full responsibility for your life, but you just need some extra help (as we all do from time to time)…
  • You’re fully committed and ready to “play full out”, knowing that we’ll only get optimal results if we work as a team, each giving 100%.

How Our Skype
Sessions Will Work

1. We will talk via Audio Skype (or I can call you on a landline phone number).

Since most of what I do relies on precise timing, I don’t do Video Skype at the moment.

(I’ve had too many problems with Video Skype cutting out, buffering, or being choppy. With most people’s connections, at least at the moment, Audio Skype—or talking on the phone—leads to the best results).

2. Each Skype session we do will last between 60 and 90 minutes.

On occasion, I go longer than 90 minutes (if I feel we’re on the edge of a major breakthrough and that stopping would be counter-productive). However, I will try my best to keep our session to between 60 and 90 minutes.

3. To make sure I deliver what I promise, I have a two session minimum even for “simple” issues.

While you’ll experience “Automatic Changes” in real-time, as we talk, from the very first session… the most valuable feedback will come from what you notice in between our sessions, as you live your life “in the real world”.

This is why having a second session is so important: we’ll use this real-world feedback to notice what Automatic Changes you’ve experienced, and then we’ll make any adjustments (if needed) in our second session.

Along with this, since no one is perfect (including me, of course)… having a second session together means that if I miss any important piece in the first session, we can address it in the second session.

Of course… it also goes without saying that it’s unrealistic, with many issues, to expect that you’ll get everything you need in one session. If you’ve had a chronic issue for many years, if you’ve already seen numerous therapists without results, or if your situation is complex (several issues that all impact each other)… expecting a 1 session “fix” is highly counter-productive (and it can actually reinforce the kind of “all-or-none thinking” that so often already plays a key part in maintaining certain problems).

So, for these reasons, even for “simple” issues, I have a two session minimum.

Two Skype sessions with me is $698 (plus you get free, full access to my Panic Free program). This is the lowest rate I’ve charged, in more than 15 years, for two 1-on-1 sessions… and it’s obviously far more affordable than traveling to work with me face-to-face (which starts at a flat fee of $2000 paid-on-results).

Skype has become my preferred method for helping people because it’s just so easy and convenient for both of us. It means I’m able to help you no matter where you are in the world, even in the middle of a busy schedule.
