STEP 2: HELP FRIENDS & FAMILY

As you’ve discovered in this series, panic attacks (and what's typically labeled as ‘panic disorder’) are very common.

Unfortunately, good help for panic is very hard to find.

Since I can't reach everyone on my own, and since we both share the same belief that we don’t want anyone to suffer in silence… if you benefit from what I’m doing here in this series, please tell others about it.

Thank you so much for helping me make a difference!

STEP 3: REINFORCE YOUR INSIGHTS

If you met someone else who experienced panic attacks and you only had 30 seconds to share ONE ESSENTIAL insight from this episode with them... what would you tell them?

Share your answer below to reinforce your long-term memory for this key insight AND to share your perspective with others (who will also share their perspectives with you).

Also, if you have any other comments for me, I'd love to hear them too.

Love,

Michael

P.S. Your email address will NOT be visible to others when you share your insight in the comments section below. Also, if you're more comfortable using just your first name, that's totally fine as well.

My wife passed away three months ago being in the hospital for several months. I think my stress level finally caused me to have the worst panic attack of my life while I was at work last week. I was convinced I was either having a heart attack or my blood sugar was way off and i was entering a diabetic coma (I’m not diabetic, but I still thought that). I had both BP and blood sugar checked at the nurse’s office at work, and both tested normal. I’ve been having terrible anxiety for months now, but the panic attack was a whole new level of misery. My panic symptoms went away immediately after being shown that I wasn’t in immediate danger, but I’ve been worried that they will come back. Thank you for this series of videos. I intend to follow it all the way through.

Hi Chris, what can I say other than my heart goes out to you. What you’ve been through would be immensely challenging and painful for ANYONE, and it’s very common for these kinds of life-events to culminate in panic attacks. I’m so glad your symptoms have immediately gone away just from knowing you’re not in danger. We’ll take the next step in Episodes 3, helping you set the groundwork so you know they don’t have to ever come back again.

I am on Lexapro 20mg daily and have been for 2 years. For the last 2 months, every day, I have had horrible debilitating anxiety attacks that last HOURS, sometimes several episodes in one day. It was exhausting and frustrating. After watching Part 2 last night, I applied what I learned to today, and for the first time in 2 months I haven’t had a single anxiety attack. I was a bit anxious at times, but it was definitely a lot more manageable then before. While I knew in my head it was only anxiety, I still haven’t been able to stop the attacks until today. Can’t wait for Part 3! Fabulous Job Michael!

From someone that has panic attacks all day , why does it make me feel like I’m going mad ?
Thank you for the video, looking forward to the next one xx .

Reply
    Michael Norman says

Hey Steff, I think I quickly explain this in the episode but very briefly: The Panic Mistake is an unconscious mistake. It’s a very fast, automatic, unconscious fight-flight response to try and protect you from a danger that’s not there. The fight-flight response needs to be an automatic response, because conscious responses are too slow, and we don’t want to have to rely on willpower, or we would never want to have to consciously remember what to do in an emergency to stay safe. So our brain and body do everything automatically, for us. This is great, except for when a mistake happens like with panic. A Panic False Alarm can make us FEEL AS IF we’re going mad (although, that’s just an illusion – it could NEVER make anyone truly go mad) because all kinds of fast, powerful, automatic processes happen outside our conscious control, to try and protect us from that danger that’s not there. On top of this, thoughts are actually driven powerfully by our emotional state. So a powerful fight-flight response can lead to all kinds of fearful, confused, or “strange” thoughts (which are only strange because they’re a result of a mistake, and so don’t rationally match the situation you’re actually in). I hope this makes sense!

Once you started talking about anxiety triggering body sensations that we learned to fear and that triggering more anxiety and so on, things started to make sense. It’s so weird when I get anxious and find myself panicking quickly and not realizing how I got there. I feel like I can see myself going through this cycle in hindsight.

Reply
    Michael Norman says

Hey Michelle, I’m glad things are starting to make more sense. The reason why you find yourself panicking and not realising how you got there (extremely common)… is because the triggers happen outside your awareness, and The Panic Pattern happens unconsciously. That’s why, as you discover in following episodes, the best solutions for panic are not reliant on willpower, conscious awareness or rationality. We want you to automatically feel and be different!

Hi Michael,

I’ve been dealing with very intense Panic Attacks….(Panic Disorder and GAD) for the last 11 years. Watching your videos have been very helpful and informative. I do have a question however about the particular panic attacks I get. So from what I’ve read most panic attacks consist of hyperventilating and rapid heart beat…mine however are a bit different when it comes to symptoms. Mine usually begin with a very odd sensation in my head(burning, cloudiness, hotness) which leads to certain areas of of numbness in my body (arms, legs), which then lead to a rapid heart beat….never really hyperventilating…but maybe crying and or worrying that something is completely wrong with me. My question is even though my symptoms don’t completely resonate with the common symptoms of a panic attack….would you still consider what I go through…a panic attack or do you think it could be something else?

Reply
    Michael Norman says

Hi Steph, I’m glad my videos are helping you and thanks for your comment. I’m not a doctor, obviously no one could answer your question over the internet, and as I mentioned in the Episode 1 handout, it’s always important to get one good medical check up. Having said these things, your experience is very common for panic (although everyone can have a different sequence of sensations). Not everyone with panic hyperventilates (although many do without knowing, because they have subtle chronic HV over time). Numbness is very common, as are very odd sensations in the head etc (a rush of hotness, cloudy thinking etc etc). If you look at the PDF you’ll see that anxiety can create a very wide-range of sensations and experiences. Again, though, relating to your specific situation, that is a question for your doctor, not me 🙂

Thank you so much for episode 2! One major takeaway is how over-breathing causes my biochemistry to change, due to an excess of CO2 release from my body. Hence, it causes all of the other weird body sensations I go through during a panic mistake that can seem extremely threatening and scary at the time. Such as: the “throat closing” feeling, an over-sensitive and nervous stomach, a numbness in my hands and arms, lightheadedness and headaches/head tightness, an overwhelming amount of tears and sinuses reaction, and on and on. Thanks once again! It’s a lot to take in so I really want to take my time processing all of this information. Especially, the PDF’s.

Hi David, you’re welcome. Yes there is a lot to take in, which in why I try to spread these episodes out. It’s great you’re going deep into the PDFs. There is a lot of information in them! Thanks for your comment!

Hi Christoper, I’m going to make a whole video on deep breathing exercises to explain my position more fully. I do cover quite a bit in the PDF though. Your experience that deep breathing exercises don’t help you is very common. Some people of course get temporary relief… but they still get panic attacks in-spite of (and I would argue partially BECAUSE of in many cases) their deep breathing exercises even years later. Thanks for your comment 🙂

Ria says

Thanks for episode 2 it made a lot of sense. I’m still afraid though that even when I know a panic attack is a false alarm, I still can’t help but to be scared of the sensations it causes. Panic attacks for me are almost always started by nausea and even though I know an attack can’t harm me, it can most definitely disrupt the situation i’m in if i’m vomiting everywhere.. How do I stop the anxiety in the first place?
Thank you for your work it’s truly inspiring

I am a cynic but I genuinely and heartfeltly feel that this may actually SAVE MY LIFE.

I have been deeply suicidal due to panic and the way it has limited my life and stopped me from achieving my goals and potential – not to mention, how awful panic feels on a day to day basis.

Because the brain can’t tell the difference between the false alarm and the saber tooth tiger – I have no life outside of work, because in my emotional mind, I go to work every day and fight a saber tooth tiger.

You cannot come home from fighting a tiger without feeling absolutely drained.

The courage it takes me to leave the house is immense.

I am not stupid. I am bright, articulate, funny, good-looking, hard-working and very courageous. This is a subconscious problem that I’ve had since childhood and is not of my own doing.

I feel you may help me to become the person I was meant to be and not spend my life in torture.

From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU.

Hi Michael
Thankyou so much for your great work.
I love the way you have simplified and demystified the whole concept of what panic actually is.
My take home insight is “whats your burnt toast?” Really shows how a trigger is such a false alarm and nowhere as big as it seems as interpreted by the learnt fear.
So looking foreward to learning the tecnique to break this debilitating cycle . Makes total sense to stop it at the root !!!!

Thanks Michael for episode 2. There are so many people that suffer in silence with this problem. I find that most doctors are too quick to dish out pills for this complaint, but after watching your video and reading your information, there are simple answers to be found, it’s like a breath of fresh air.

Everything you say does make sense and seems backed up with theory. I had cancer a few months ago and after an operation, which removed the tumour, I reacted badly to the anaesthetic having panic attacks in hospital. Since then over the last six months I’ve had waves of fear attacks, which I controlled by slowing by breathing, then psychological issues which caused anxiety and panic attacks, and which CBT helped. Recently I developed tinnitus and as you can’t fight this (it makes it worse) you have to accept it, but I’ve not felt able to do so, and my mother also developed cancer. Every day I worry and then get stressed and my brain races round (monitoring my body and brain for any upsets) till I either end up hysterical or fighting a panic attack. I truly hope that you will give some concrete information in episode 3. I desperately need it.

He is finding that listening to Michael is calming, relaxing and he is beginning to understand what and why he is getting so much anxiety. I think the thing that resonated with me the most in Episode 2 is the “Recipe for a Panic Attack” cycle. That’s exactly what happens to me. I feel anxious (lately because my husband is chronically ill and I feel fear around being alone one day) and then the body sensations start. Because of my past history with panic, I get anxious about the body sensations, and then more sensations start. And then…well, full-blown panic. It was great to see this put out there in front of me, because I literally said, “Yes! That’s exactly what happens!” While I have to deal with my fear of perhaps one day being alone, my more immediate need is to stop panic attacks from occurring. As such, I’m looking forward to Episode 3!

Hi Michael, thank you for sending the link to the second episode, Panic Explained. Based from your explanation, my panic attacks are learned patterns created by bodily sensations associated with anxiety. It’s almost like expecting to have panic attacks the moment I feel my heart beat faster and when I start hyperventilating. Everything you said is true! Thank goodness for your excellent research on this topic.

Going back to your ability to walk again, I can’t help but be inspired. It takes a lot of courage and determination to achieve this feat.

I am excited to learn more about your mother’s journey to heal herself from MS. I know that one day, we can conquer this disease. Much love to her.

Until then, I hope to hear from you soon. I’m wondering what lies ahead in episode 3. I like the way you present the topics in the first two episodes. May God bless you more for helping people like me who suffer from the false alarm of panic.

Hi Michael,

Thank you so much for creating this valuable video series, and thank you for making them free! They are certainly helping me cope. It helps to know I’m not alone, and that there are scientific reasons behind what I’m going through.

I was lucky enough to feel “normal” until my first panic attack (just 2 weeks ago), and since then, I have been jumping out of my skin with strange, scary symptoms from “tingles” to tight muscles to heart palpitations. The first time I was rushed to the ER, I even had low blood potassium (which I’m assuming/hoping hyperventilation can cause, just as you mention in this video).

It’s truly amazing and frightening what stress can do to our bodies! I had no idea panic and anxiety could be this bad, and even now, it’s hard to believe! If nothing else, this has been a humbling learning process for me. I will share your video series with everyone I love, even those who haven’t had anxiety or panic episodes. The information you provide is incredibly valuable and relevant to all.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for providing this much-needed help, support, and understanding to those suffering from this frightening condition. May you and yours be blessed, always.

Looking forward to watching episode 3, and hopefully, joining the ranks of the Panic Free again soon!

I recently been having panic attack type symptoms( overwhelming butterflies/tightness in stomach, nauseau, sudden extreme lightheadedness and head fog). I went to my doctor and he says it’s anxiety…BUT I am in my fifties and have NEVER EVER had panic attacks before(aside from butterflies in stomach occasionally). I don’t have hyperventilation which is supposed to be associated with panic attacks and there is no events in my life right now that I can consciously see as the triggers, so anxiety/panic does’nt make sense to me!?! So is this what I have? Anxiety /Panic attacks?

Reply
    Michael Norman says

Hi Vito, while I can’t comment on your specific situation… I can make a few general comments. First… not all panic attacks are associated with hyperventilation (there is a subgroup that’s not). Also, false alarms can come at any age… and while less common, many people still start getting false alarms much later in life. On top of this, sometimes false alarms happen from very innocuous things. Stressful life events, while common, are not always required. So your doctor might well be right… but since I’ve never met you, I can’t comment on your specific situation. I hope this helps. Thanks for your comment!

I came across this the first time I was looking to educate myself on why I get panic attacks and needed a logical reason as I’ve gone through therapy and psychiatric help and still wouldnt get a straight answer on to why I felt the way I did when this would happen and this has saved me on so many ways I can not thank you enough for this! I recently started getting panic attacks again and I needed clear answers since I am so tired of the same circle medication therapy etc. You have calmed me for a second time now and helped me understand so much and stopped and other panic attack from me ending up in the hospital. I will share this with as many people as I can everyone who suffers from anxiety and panic should know about you. Thanks you sooo much!!

Just watched episode 2 and learnt a whole heap! I identified what my trigger is and realised actually how far back in my life it has been controlling me. Can’t wait to finally be panic free. Roll on episode 3!

When an ER doctor told me I was “chronically hyperventilating” by over breathing I thought it was bs. How could breathing hurt me?? Thank you for explaining this concept so simply and helping me understand how this relates to and increases my symptoms.

I just finished episode 2. There were some great insights into what I’ve been experiencing, thanks again! I feel dizzy when a panic event takes place and I think I’m going to pass out. I have become more and more secluded in my lifestyle because most places are associated with anxiety in my mind. I am encouraged and eager to have a life free from panic. Thank you!

Loved this. The panic pattern was very interesting. out of the blue panic attacks happen to me a lot- but I learned that something actually does trigger them. Additionally, places can do that too. I’ve been doing tons of breathing exercises- and they aren’t working so I’m glad you mentioned that!!! Can’t wait for episode 3!!

Just the sound of your voice is soothing.. I just can’t believe you’re trying to help people expecting nothing in return. You’re one of a kind, Norman. Thank you. And i truly pray for your mother. I wish she gets better – i know most would say it’s impossible but I’ve learnt from you that nothing is impossible. So yeah just hope she recovers fully. Don’t lose hope! Lots of love~ your 1# fan, well wisher and whatever you call a person that’s fully inspired by you 😉

Hi Michael, I need to thank you again for everything you do! The videos are amazing and the fact sheets are so helpful! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking your time to do this work and to share it with everyone. Episode 1 was a huge help for me and Episode 2 was even better! Your videos instantly calm me and remind me that the sensations I’m feeling when anxious are just false alarms! The whole panic pattern just makes sense. I’ve been asking myself “what’s your burnt toast?”..and I think I’ve figured it out. I honestly have learned so much and feel like I WILL live Panic Free! I can’t wait for Episode 3☺
P.S. I have told a few people about your videos who I know could benefit from the help.

Your video has helped me realize that I am afraid of the sensation of tightness in my chest. At times I feel like I’m suffocating and I had no idea what was wrong with me. To know that I can break this cycle and take control over my panic attacks makes me feel empowered. Thank you, I can’t wait to watch the next video.

I understand the concept of the sensitive safety alarm – it is a fabulous analogy. I am currently seeking out why it became sensitive? What turns up the dial of sensitivity?

Anxiety alone causes a cycle of symptoms and more anxiety. The more afraid you are of the thoughts and feelings, the more the anxiety intensifies.
